Rumor mills are spewing possible release of a foldable smartphone from Samsung. Here is everything you would want to know about the rumor and the speculations surrounding it.
Technology, is elastic. Well, guess Samsung is all set to give an all new meaning to tech elasticity with its revolutionary foldable smartphone phone. The Korean tech behemoth which got some bad press recently for its corporate scandals is now earning some good karma with its innovative product that will deliver “luxurious design and high-quality” which is internally referred to as ‘Project Valley’.
Commercially christened ‘Galaxy X’ the foldable handset is expected to reach store shelves by September 2017. As a matter of fact, Samsung had earlier released the concept phone in CES 2013 followed by a prototype in CES 2014. A handful partners also got their hands on the phone at the Mobile World Congress 2017 at Barcelona.
Specs & Features that Matter
We know from rumor mills that the device will sport a OLED display. The hardware design will resemble something like the clamshell phones that were a rage in the early 2000s.
The screen size is speculated to be in the band of 5.5 to 6.2 inch. Since it is a foldable phone, the total screen size should double up to almost the size of a tablet when unfolded.
We could not find any solid and reliable information about the chipsets and other internal components that will make up the handset. However, it can be assumed that the specs will beat Samsung’s yet to be released flagship models including Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8. That means, the device could possibly have under its hood at least 2 ~ 3 GB RAM with 32GB+ ROM.
The big question here is, how would the battery be placed? The bendable design is a double edged sword. If the battery life is sacrificed for more screen space, then the very idea will prove to be impractical.
That said, we will have to wait until Q3 2017 to have a glimpse of the device and its real prowess. Until then, it is only a paper concept that Samsung can boast about.
Samsung is expected to ramp up commercial production of the bendable handset once commercial viability and demand is proven post the September release. It is also worth noting that Apple will also be releasing its iPhone 8 the first of its kind with OLED screen in the same time.
Samsung Has Got Competition
Samsung is not the only smartphone manufacturer who is gearing up to release a foldable handset. Oppo, Lenovo, Vevo and LG are also on the works to enter this futuristic segment. We haven’t heard anything about Apple working on a foldable concept. The bendgate of iPhone 6 Plus yet to wear off.
Global Launch Not in the Plans
According to Sammobile, Samsung does not have plans of a global launch for the foldable smartphone. Instead, it will ship 100,000 units to major markets including South Korea, Germany, Poland, France, Italy, UK, Ireland and certain Nordic countries.
